This song was written to represent Jason Marsing's life story if he hadn't been killed by his partner PJ Dimdeed in the radio play Snow Blow Hard: Xmas with a Vengeance, as revealed to Duke Bramblevine by his guardian angel Clemens. It's also based partially on Howard Lyman's story about a rancher who came to realize the horrors of factory farming and completely changed his mind about the industry as well as his personal consumption of animal products.
I've done wrong - I did lots of bad things
Bad for me and bad for you and I did them all big
Acres of nitrates and sewage and bug spray
and irradiated sludge was the stew
from whence we brewed truckoads of french fries, cheeseburgers, and double chocolate fudge
I had a partner in crime and when that scoundrel drowned
I stuffed my face with triglycerides
Until my heart literally broke
I changed my sex 7 times with rBGH and diethylstillbestrol and more
Sinking to rock bottom in a sea of transfat
When in a hospital bed I awoke.
Chorus:
Now I'm trying hard to do right by living clean
And telling others how they can do the same
I'm a rancher gone vegan and I'm not afraid to say why
Every factory farm mass produces sickness and death
For farmers and workers and critters and you who buy
For the Earth beneath our feet and worst of all
There's no reason why.
Once people ate quite well and could again
If we used our new knowledge to lessons from when
food was grown locally without chemicals or drugs
I'm leading the way forward while leading the way back.
Zeranol and estradol and melengestrol
Trenbolone acetate, progesterone, and DES
With organic collectives and my eco-dude ranch
Now I'm trying hard to do right by living clean
And telling others how they can do the same
I'm a rancher gone vegan and I'm not afraid to say why
Every factory farm mass produces sickness and death
For farmers and workers and critters and you who buy
For the Earth beneath our feet and worst of all
There's no reason why.
I'm leading the way forward while leading my way back
With organic collectives and my eco-dude ranch.
